Johns Hopkins University Research Technologist in Baltimore, Maryland
Performs lab management activities such as ordering, stocking of consumables, and equipment management. Manages animal colonies and performs breeding and behavioral experiments. Under general supervision, performs research laboratory experiments by following established procedures and protocols or with instruction. Uses basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab. Runs lab tests and completes measurements as assigned. Identifies and resolves common problems and uses analytical skills to implement assigned projects. Understands the role of senior lab members and accepts constructive guidance. Sets up experiments based on defined standards. Collects and maintains project data.
Responsible for routine lab operational activities such as: ordering supplies and materials, reviewing inventory, maintaining up to date records, maintaining equipment, cleaning/autoclaving glassware, etc.
Assists with care and maintenance of mouse colonies, including breeding activities.
Assists with animal experiments, including drug treatments, sample collection, and behavioral experiments.
Performs research lab tests and experiments.
Follows established procedures and protocols, utilizes appropriate techniques to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments.
Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication.
Regular interaction with students, vendors, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty members.
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field required.
Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
Prior experience in a basic science laboratory, particularly with a background in immunology, neuroscience, and/or neuroimmunology.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ordering systems such as SAP.
Animal work including breeding/care, procedures such as tail vein injection, behavioral studies.
Molecular biology including PCR, plasmid DNA preparation, immunoblotting, ELISA; Histology/Imaging including tissue preparation and staining; Cell culture; Basic immunology and metabolism studies.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
