WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER The Freshwater Restoration Specialist will help the The Nature Conservancy in Georgia maximize its contribution towards the organization's 2030 Goals. These goals for freshwater work are to increase the resilience of streams and rivers, conserve and increase the quality of habitat critical to maintaining aquatic biodiversity, and increase resilience of downstream human communities to climate change impacts. Conservation projects will be carried out under supervision of the Freshwater Director and in close collaboration with federal, state, non-profit, tribal, and community partners. Work will focus on implementing aquatic restoration projects including barrier removals (fish passage constructs, dam removals, undersized culvert replacements), instream habitat improvements, and bank stability and riparian enhancements.The position will predominately focus on achieving specific grant objectives for currently funded fish passage projects in the Ocmulgee River Basin. They will be responsible for all aspects of grant implementation including coordinating with partners, establishing deadlines, soliciting contractor bids, managing contractor agreements, ensuring all tasks are performed timely and to standards, maintaining budget and metric tracking documents, and drafting reports. They will work closely with the project partners to establish and implement community engagement plans that ensure participation of a diversity of social groups to increase support for aquatic restoration goals. The Specialist will review contractor deliverables including condition/environmental assessments, hydrology models, and restoration designs, ensure permitting requirements are met, oversee monitoring and construction, assist with developing outreach content, and convey project information and progress to a variety of audiences. Other statewide opportunities include assisting with writing of watershed planning documents and grant proposals, outreach, and other freshwater restoration projects. It may be necessary to work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult/hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. This position is full-time and salaried with a term of 3 years. Term extension is dependent on funding. WHAT YOU'LL BRING Bachelor's degree and 3 years' experience in freshwater ecology or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working with a variety of partners, including collaboration, negotiation, and relationship building. Experience with communication via written, spoken, and graphical means in English. Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, web browsers, etc. and virtual meeting applications such as Zoom, Teams, and Google Meets. Experience managing and executing complex projects. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Self-motivated worker capable of being productive when working independently. Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated. 3-5 years' experience in freshwater ecology, similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of freshwater conservation practices, science, and restoration techniques. Knowledge of permitting requirements for aquatic restoration projects. Experience with aquatic field work, particularly with migratory fishes and/or habitat restoration. Knowledge of Georgia freshwater ecology, hydrology, and aquatic biota with emphasis on migratory fishes and species of greatest conservation need (SGCN). SALARY INFORMATION The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $48,600-$63,063 for annual base salary. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience.
