The Director for HSI Initiatives position is a holistic role to create and develop all HSI related initiatives (student recruitment, student retention, community outreach, grantsmanship, etcetera) in support of a comprehensive program that is Institutionalized, Intentional and Incentivized. The Director for HSI Initiatives will be charged with leading efforts, serving as the institutional subject matter expert and primary liaison, in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, for activities that support Latino student, faculty, and staff while also working in close collaboration with the broader university community. With emphasis on leveraging our status as a Hispanic Serving Institution, the Director for HSI Initiatives will be responsible for understanding cultural and social phenomena, researching data and trends, grant development activity for Titles III , V and VII , capacity and relationship building with internal and external stakeholders.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct research and analysis on a variety of policies, projects, programs, and procedures to understand and demonstrate impact of the same as levers or barriers to success and share best practices for inclusive excellence for Latino students, faculty, and staff.
Lead institutional strategic planning to accomplish the university’s long-term goal of meeting the needs and interests of Latino students, faculty, staff, and communities in the DFW Metroplex, Texas and the U.S.
Lead university stakeholders in development and deployment of an institutional review process for vetting Title III , V and VII HSI proposals when the funding agency has limited the number of submissions per institution.
Lead efforts to identify and select external Grant Consultants for Title III , V and VII HSI proposals.
Cultivate and sustain relationships with external partners and thoughts leaders, at the state, regional and national levels to identify, anticipate and develop appropriate initiatives that address underlying needs and concerns of Latino communities.
Lead and convene the University’s HSI Team, including weighing in on membership, determining meeting dates, agenda items, and providing input on strategic directions in the HSI space for consideration of the university administration.
Lead the development and deployment of communications and messaging tools to inform the communities we serve on progress towards meeting our mission as an HSI .
Provide effective leadership and supervision of program coordinator and any staff allocated to the HSI -Initiative’s space.
Ensure preparation of institutional applications for HSI eligibility and national distinctions (e.g. Seal of Excelencia, Fulbright, U.S. Department of Education designation as HSI , etc.).
Provide consultive services, as resident subject matter expert, to departments, units, colleges, and external stakeholders on HSI Initiatives.
Engage and maintain an active role in the HSI Consortium at the state and national levels.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Master’s degree in education, counseling, sociology, public administration, or closely related field with five (5) years of experience with Latino issues in higher education, education.
KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledgeable about HSIs, Latino students and communities, student success and equity-minded intervention experiences.
Knowledge of and familiarity with research-based and data-driven expertise to achieve the highest standards of academic excellence, retention, and graduation for Hispanic/Latino/Latinx students of color, first-generation, low-income, and other historically minoritized students.
Advanced knowledge and skills in planning, administrating, and organizing student success programs and activities for Latino students.
Ability to make conscious, informed decisions and recommendations regarding institutional directions and initiatives in the HSI space.
Advanced knowledge and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of first-generation Latino students.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with all colleges, departments, units, and external stakeholders to advance the university’s mission as a Hispanic Serving Institution.
Ability to successfully compete for Title III , V, and VII grants and engage meaningfully with external stakeholder through effective outreach initiatives.
Ability to manage a multi-level, multi-faceted, institutional, and strategically coordinated effort for HSI Initiatives.
Ability to work collaboratively with all stakeholders including but not limited to Enrollment Management, Academic Affairs, Student Affairs.
Ability to work collaboratively in grant writing, management, and oversight of internal and externally funded initiatives.
Ability to lead developing and implementing academic curricula and/or designing and implementing learning and culturally sustaining pedagogical models, cultural competence, and faculty development programs around HSI related concerns.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of students, faculty, staff, partners, and guests of the university verbal, written and electronic communications in English and Spanish.
Doctor of Philosophy in education, counseling, sociology, public administration, or a related field with seven (7) or more years of strong experience with Latino issues in higher education and effective communication in English and Spanish.
Work environment consists of standard office conditions. Ability to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed to engage communities, or represent the University. Use of a personal vehicle for work-related, local travel. Criminal background check required.
